Final Report Summary
For the Greiner Art Competition and Purchase Award Exhibition, I designed the layout, curated, and installed the artwork with Evan Miller. We were able to use each wall in the gallery in order to space the artwork out enough to not distract form one another. We made sure that no heavy contrast pieces were adjacent and that Sara Wines large colorful sculpture was in the back left corner because it was the heaviest visually. We spread out the type of artwork as well. For example, we placed the watercolor next to the photographs, next to the sculptures, next to the prints, etc. We did not have two of the same medium next to each other, again to break up the visual unity. It was important to use to create as much visual variety as possible.
The goals of the Greiner Art Competition and Purchase Award Exhibition were achieved. The outcome was a piece was chosen that won. The winner this year is interesting because she had two pieces entered in the show. Because Evan and I split up the pieces, the judges were most likely not able to tell that they were by the same artist which helped her by not voting for both of neither of the pieces from knowing they were by the same artist.
There was a high attendance of this event form my observations in and out of the CFA. I also heard a lot of students talk about it in casual everyday conversation. I got comments on my curation and the quality of the show which also shows me that several people attended.
For the future, I recommend that those who wish to enter their works in the competition enter them on the day that is in the email, flyer, and what the professor and curator says. When art work was submitted a day late, I had to rehang and move around the entire show to create the same visual variety we wanted in the beginning. I was happy with the way it ended up, but it caused me stay in the gallery for several more hours than I planned and expected. I would also request some more help to physically hang up artwork and stop being stubborn.
