Benefits
-Documents a moment, feeling, memory, etc. forever, which allows it to communicate clearly for an unlimited amount of time.
-Allows the viewer to focus on one thing, rather than processing a video, lecture, song, etc. One image is simple and allows the viewer to fully look and stay focused on what the artwork is trying to convey.
-Sometime words can be deceiving or not tell the full story. For example, if I were to say "Love", someone would not feel as strongly as seeing a photograph of a couple kissing in a field holding hands. For another example, if I were to say "Injured", someone would not feel as strongly as seeing a photograph of a solider with his legs blown off and burns all over his body. Therefore, a photograph removes this deception.
-Very portable and marketable: physical or digital prints.
-Can make someone question reality based on the point of view, type of developing, cropping, content, etc. of a photograph. This is not as easy to do with other forms of communication because darkroom photography is all manual.

Drawbacks
-Some concepts and ideas require many images which can be overwhelming for a viewer
-Some concepts and ideas may be too complicated to communicate visually; an image can only tell part of a story
-Different people can respond differently to artwork based on their beliefs and how they grew up
-It may be hard to get the right size of the photograph: too big or two small is distracting
-The cost of printing photographs is very expensive compared to giving a lecture, making a film (if you are self-employed), writing a song, etc.
