"I should have"
Artist Statement
The desire to eliminate a regret before it happens is worry.
The desire to eliminate a regret after it happens is futile.
Nothing can change through worrying about the future or dwelling over the past. However, this yearning to alter the future and past can trap the mind in believing worry and futility are productive. This desire to eliminate regret while trying to learn to accept it creates anxiety and convinces the brain that it is moving faster. It is only at the end of the learning process where two parts of a whole, one trying to learn and one trying to rebel eventually become one.
Materials: Chalkboard, chalk, myself as a performer, video
Installation: Projected onto the wall with the figure the actual size of a human body

Prompt
Using one camera, create a video that deals with how time can erase and resurface the past. This can be abstract or realistic. Time can erase feelings because they are in the past: what does it mean to manipulate time in order to take something back that is a thought or a feeling.

Artist Influences
Glenn Ligon
In understanding the approach to my remix project, I was interested in how Glenn later figure out that he was not interested in self expression. He decided that he was interested in using letters that were text and not his own hand writing in which made his pieces more universal. I was inspired by Glenn because It helped me understand that I was interested in self expression which is why I chose to work in my own handwriting. I was able to see that choosing my own handwriting was a way to express my personal feelings of regret, but leaving out specific regrets are how I connect back to Glenn. I want dot create some universal quality to my work as Glenn does by leaving the regret open ended for the viewer. I am also influenced by how Glenn believes it takes a while to figure an idea out. This has helped me to let go of trying to figure out an idea right away and letting it happen over time. That is how I arrived at my final work, by allow the idea to grow over time.

Ann Hamilton
Ann's "Book Ball" piece below inspired me in creating my final work because I was very interested in the stream of consciousness that she implied. By connecting all of the lines of the book in the order they are read implies that you have to go through the whole process of reading each line in order, to full understand the message and to fully unwrap the ball. By creating a video that was one take (one tie of each layer), I imply to the viewer that they must watch the whole story in order to fully understand it. You cannot cut out part of the order if you desire to read the end. This also implies that you must go through the entire process of learning to let go that you cannot eliminate regrets before or after they happen. Ann's attention to order as a process influenced me to stress the learning process as something that will lead to an acceptance and understand at the end,
