Composition Analyzation:
The composition of this piece is successful thought the visual texture and shape and other things. This piece has an amazing rough visual texture that is visual and physical. The texture helps the composition because it helps the viewer see that the piece s made of sandstone or some other rock material. It makes the piece look dated because it looks old which creates unity with the color and the shape because it looks very primal and old. The shape is very organic which creates unity with the texture because they are both natural. The circle in the middle of the piece adds some nice shape variety to the piece however, the similar color value and texture still creates unity. The hole in the middle adds variety because there is no hole anywhere else. However, there are little pores and cracks all over which adds to the variety of the hole and helps to de-emphasize it. The focal point is the center piece, aerially, the circle. This is because it is a different hue and has a hole. Although this is the main variety there is still unity in the texture and organic circular shape. There is an obvious foreground, middle ground, and background due to the organic sculptural-esque quality of this piece. The piece dips down in the front to create a dark cast shadow to create the foreground. The piece then has the organic circle in the middle ground. The piece then goes back into space in creating it being three dimensional which is the background.
This piece shown of Brian Harper was a major influence on the glaze texture of my final portfolio form nature abstracted. I wanted to get a rough, rocky look. I did this by sponging on the glaze so it was no uniform. I wanted to juxtapose this rough texture with a smooth black back to not overwhelm the viewer.
