Final Report Summary
From the Winter Student Art Showcase, I found that it was very important to group specific project next to each other to create a sense of unity for the viewer and for each class. For example, the Graphic Design Art work was split up into two separate projects. We decided to separate the letter forms from the translations so viewers can understand why some of the artwork looks drastically different than others. We decided to put the letterform artworks in a rigid rectangle format because it complimented the square format of the artworks. We decided to put the translations in a ovular random pattern because none of the art work was the same size or orientation. This way the viewer can look around all of the artwork at first.
We decided to put the Art Club artwork across the graphic design artwork to not compete with each other. We oriented the artwork in a flanking way with the Splatter Paint Canvas as the center piece because it was the tallest in height and width and had the most color and was the only one of its kind. Because there were 6 foam core collages, we flank 3 on each side, stacking 2 next to the canvas, and one besides the two. Because these all had similar colors, we tried to moved them around slightly to create a visual balance.
Although this part of the Showcase was in the back hallway, from my observations, I believe it still got enough traffic. We did not have a comment box, but form by times in and out of the CFA I saw several people looking at the show. I did receive some feedback from viewers that they enjoyed the separation of Art Club and Graphic Design and of the two projects within the graphic design portion. They explained how it was easier to understand that way rather than mixing up the projects and the artwork.
I learned that you cannot psychically hang up a show by yourself. Always have someone hang with you. Stop being stubborn. I also learned that it is easier to conceptualize the design layout to hang the artwork if you display it all on the floor in front of the wall. It makes it seem more real and plausible and proportional.
There were enough people affected because I saw some facebook posts about the show, I talked to a couple students and faculty who saw the show, and I heard about other students who talked about the show to their friends. This word of mouth and voluntary feedback was a good indication of effect of people of the show.
