Artist Statement
I am interested in investigating time and how it can feel limiting and destructive. I make work to recreate an internal feeling to share this feeling with others. Soon I realize that others have this experience as well. I like my work to be very personal to me but including myself in the work or a part of my soul or thoughts. I have trouble voicing my feelings, but I have always been good at giving visual examples. My art has been the best way to put these feelings out in the open for others to look at and then gather their own understanding from them. It is difficult for me to put my feelings out in the world, but I know that when I do this, I feel better. Therefore, I make art as a healing process to put myself out into the world for others to be aware that they are not alone in their feelings.
The medium I am exploring working with is paper. Paper is very relatable and accessible for everyone. Because it is relatable, I can connect to a wider range of people. Paper also has a connection to thoughts and feelings. Paper has a connection to communicating with other people because we print fliers, writer letters, makes advertisements, etc. on it. It’s a way to communicate to the world in a physical way. For me, paper is a physical way to communicate my thoughts and feelings to the world.
My process of creating is a very natural process because I take a medium, in this case my fascination with paper, and how I feel and I just experiment and push it. If I try to plan something out too much, I feel like I will miss something. By allowing myself to create and then step back helps me take apart my natural feelings and then try to understand them. By allowing myself to react to my feelings and a medium, I find a deeper connection to why I create by reflecting on my natural impulses.
I am interested in investigating the sense time as an obstacle that prevents me from being the best person I can be. I feel as though time traps me in a box and doesn’t allow me to fully express myself. However, when I create art that express my frustration with time, I get a sense of relief just from being able to get rid of the thoughts in my head.
